Bluff Hill Cove, Great Island
Have a house on the cove in two weeks and my maps show extremely shallow water. Is anyone familiar with navigating the cove by boat?
Any help would be appreciated, Richard |
it can be tricky, especially at low water, but mid tide or better and you should have 2+ feet. ask the homeowner, i'm sure they will fill you in exactly with best route in/out.

its all mud / so if you sway from the channel its no big deal ><><ENJOY >> Ask Denis on this site . he has a friend that lives on the island & they schoolie fish all around the island .East & Pond also ><><

Thanks, we are in the 100's on East Shore Rd north of the boat ramp. House has a dock but I am hoping it is not too tide dependent as that cuts down on opportunities. I was hoping to ride up in the boat and avoid trailering so maybe I'll give it a try.
Thanks for the help, Richard |
There are some decent size boats on that road. like clammer said, just stay in the "channel" going from the bridge to your dock, don't go out in the middle, that is where it is really shallow.
If you look on google maps satellite view you will see the "channel" and also like clammer said, if you do bump outside the channel at normal no-wake speed, it is just soft mud and you can back right back into the channel. I kept my boat on the east side of the island for 3 years. GI is one of the best locations in RI, IMO. I am still looking for a new spot on the island to this day, as a matter of fact. |
Thanks, that's encouraging as I was think I would need to use the north end of the cove and take the long way around.

Just go slow, very tricky channel.Stay close to the markers, very hard to see at night.
But like Mike said all mud. |
Be very carefull going out the north end, lots of rocks in the salt pond where the two ponds meet.

It can get VERY shallow around the ram's head, so if you are south of there, which i think you are, just go south and under the bridge. |
Thanks everyone, south it is slow and steady and I'll breathe better when I get to the bridge.
