Still a few good ones left...

three's not as many as there once was.. but enough to make it interesting...Best one last week was 48" long with a 30" girth.. 44lbs... but most fish are 3-5lbs with a few 20lb class mixed in...live eels in shallow water are getting it done.

So how does it look for you - the trend in your waters over say the last 5 years. |

IMHO...with the measures that we have in place... the general publics awareness ... and the amount of brood stock still in place is enough for me to think that part ( not all) of the "problem" we are seeing are a part of a natural cycle....as long as we as fisherman and consumers.. which in one way of the other we ALL are .. remain vigilant and attentive. Make adjustments to our fishing when we need to and not over react to fluctuations up or down... striped bass will flourish and be plentiful for our children .. grand children and great grand children... we'll just have to endure some unpleasant outings and depressingly hard times...it's always not going to be blitzes and monsters... I think we all got a little "spoiled" with the numbers of super heavy fish available over the last 10 years ..... the current "downturn" in big fish has me appreciate what I've witnessed a little more... each trip is a blessing... each cow.. a gift... |
Great insights there Joe. Some of my buddies have been talking about the need to reset expectations in the current fishing climate, some say they don't want to, but I think its kind of inevitable if you want to get any enjoyment out of this.
I am happy if I am catching striped bass, any striped bass, it's better to me than going to freshwater or *gasp* golf! |

Jealous? Yes. Fish will be around? I'll keep going with low expectations but high confidence. Been 18-22" bass the few times I actually caught them, lucky the bluefish have been big to keep me distracted since the bass hits were never with authority and the "fight" felt more like me reeling in a ball of seaweed. I'll let you know when the bass become plentiful because if I'm catching, multiply it by 3 for those who are able to do it more than me and better...considering I'm probably the age of many people's grandkids |
