Do whatever you can to protect yourselves and your families. Tick checks must be a part of our outdoor lives. Lyme and the three other tick borne diseases are no joke!

Our luck ran out this past week as my 22 year old daughter has been hospitalized since Sunday night, when she spiked a 103.5 degree fever. It has been hell to watch your child go through something like this. Took a few days to diagnose, during which she endured a spinal tap to rule out meningitis and encephalitis. Never saw a tick or a bite. But she has Lyme, and may have more of those other diseases tick carry. We won't know for another week. She has turned a corner and is much improved this evening. Antibiotics are working. But she was very sick and it scared the hell out of me.

So please implement a plan for you and your family...... checks, spray, appropriate clothing, and being aware.

Sorry to hear Ross, glad she's doing better.

Yeah it's no joke, my dad got Lyme 5 years ago and went undiagnosed for who knows how long before that.

Sorry to hear that Ross,,
I remember all too well the feeling I had when I pulled one off my 3 year old...just a few years ago. Absolutely sick to my stomach, kept it in jar in case they needed to test it. When he was cleared, I slowly tortured that bastard for a few days.....didn't make me feel any better, :af:....but since then, I do my best in giving him a full body inspection.

Such a difficult creature to protect yourself from. Even in clothing, you can actually bring them in the house.

God - Speed for a full recovery my friend.

My 4 year old son found the most insany tiny speck of a tick i have ever seen crawling on him today. Scary, as i would never spot that.

Sorry to hear Ross. One year ago today I was in same predicament. Same symptoms and tests and hospital stays It was hell. Plus I never got a positive Lyme test. You have to be vigilant. My stamina stills seems to be an issue to this day. Hope for a Speedy recovery for her.

I hope she has a speedy and full recovery.

Last spring I had lyme ...same thing...no tick..no bite or bullseye. It wiped me out and it was probably the worst illness I had experienced. I suspect I picked it up fishing.

Ross, hope for a quick recovery.

To those who haven't yet been afflicted it is a terrible disease with very subtle but long lasting symptoms and on top of that the tests don't work.

So sorry to hear about your daughter getting lyme disease Ross.
My wife recently found one imbedded in her ankle underneath her sock
and we've been watching the wound for the characteristic bulls eye
pattern that takes two weeks to show itself but it seems to be fading.

You can trust the ANTI BIOTICS or you can supplement the bodies Immune
system to help fight along side them. I've written plenty here at S-B on
this subject on other "tick" threads.

even though NUDITY becomes an embarrassing subject you have to have a
Backside checker because turning around for self checks is really difficult to do in the mirror or by holding a hand mirror.

Ticks have a substance in their mouths that essentially gives you a "local"
numbing so they an screw them selves in. It always blows my mind how
they seem to have an On board navigation system of where to Avoid detection.

I hope all goes well for your daughter... hopefully you caught it in time....Brian ( Night shift) has been battling Lyme and a few of the other associated diseases for several years now..

He quickly runs out of energy and is on something related to ( or similar to) low dose chemo... he just put his boat in the water but hasn't fished ..one night out and he cant get out of bed the next day...

Sorry to hear that Ross. My wife has been sick for over 12 years now due to Tick Born diseases. They CAN be, without a doubt, a MF'er. Hope your daughter has a quick recovery.

Damn Ross. Don't end does it. hope she gets better soon. Thats one of the reason for those red neoprene socks I wear now. Supposedly they don't like red. not sure if it really works but helps me think it does. Between checks,bug juice an clothing changes it all helps.

Glad to hear the antibiotics have helped the fever. How is the migraines? any better?

Hope she has a speedy recovery. I just pulled one off of myself three days ago. Dr. gave me a dose of doxy, "just in case."

I was at a wedding this past weekend and was talking with a long time friend,he told me that hell has been to hell and back !!
He told me that lyme has many curves and bumps, he said that lyme can mimic other symptoms
He will yelp for no reason and FORGET stuff for a split second like his cat or car color.....
I have a german shepard and a outdoor cat that we were pulling them off daily.

Oh man that's horrible, I hope she gets well soon!

Here is hoping for a speedy recovery. I pulled 3 of of myself this year. I usually find a few bigger ticks each spring, this year they were all dear ticks, not sure what caused the bump. I have them taped to the fridge. Last year a buddy of mine came down with it or the 3rd time, this time while we were on Block. He was bed ridden for the majority of the trip.

I believe that, due to the meds I take for my heart, BP and cancer, I am immune to bugs.

I work in the woods almost everyday. I never get bit by gnats, mosquitoes and have never pulled a tick off my body.

Cape Cod is tick city. We let our chickens free range to feed on ticks.
It helps, but only in the yard

I'm old enough to remember burning off fields and underbrush before the bookworms took over our lives.
You can't tell me that it didn't cook a few ticks

I got bit last November and went on the prescribed meds without issue. I got bit again in April by the smallest of deer tick nymphs and decided to hold off on the meds and wait and see. Within two weeks I had Lyme disease symptoms and went on the meds, and again did okay. This is with having my yard sprayed for deer ticks twice a year and treating footwear and wearing boots at times. It's a jungle out there. Have heard some horror stories, as we probably all have. Glad to hear she's on the road to recovery.

About 2 months ago, was helping my father repair the shed. Held up a 2x4 for him and felt a soreness on my rib section. Took off my shirt to find out it was a tick, literally the size of a speck of sand, smallest I've ever seen, starting to feed. Pulled it, brought it to the doctors, had some tests done. Luckily negative results. May have been one of the scariest but in this case the best thing only because I saw that efffin bastard.
