Quincy

Thinking about taking a job and moving to Quincy. I checked out the area and plan to be close to Ballston? Beach. Took a walk and found a fishy looking estuary at the end. How is the striper fishing in Boston? I mainly fly fish at night.
Thanks

That spot at the end of Wolly Beach is fishy, but you will never be alone. There is a very active fishing population in Quincy. You can hop in the car and explore lots of nearby Harbor shoreline. I used to fish from Southie all the way down the south half of the harbor to Hull. Down south a bit to the North and South River's. I bet the fly rod would slay right now.

You mean Wollaston Beach? Ballston Beach is in Truro on the Cape! Wollaston is ok! Have not fished there much myself but the kayak guys do well out there!

Wollaston is a waste of time from shore.

The west perimeter (oitside)of the Sugar bowl from the right hand Locke to the beginning/memorial flags the dropping tide was pretty good you can wade out and fish into that channel where the boats a moored up bait would hold up close to the boats.
I fished there years ago mid 90's to mid 00's

Agree with 5/0. Sugar bowl with the flyrod was a go to spot when I first moved to Boston fished it 99-05. As far as Wollaston, its pretty flat. There is a creek that has gates constricting waterflow that is always a popular spot. Problem is if the gates are closed and flow is low it doesn't fish very well. I can't say I have been there in like 7 years so certainly a ton could have changed.

Sugar bowl is south boston, not Quincy.
I would think for a shore guy in Quincy best bet would be Squantum or out towards Moon Island, but I'm not sure about access.
Moon island has a police target range and farthest out is the fire academy training facility, so it may be off limits.

The road to moon island from Squantum is not accessible.
As kids in the 60's we used to ride bikes out there and live line macs off the old death trap piers. Got some nice bass where all the ex cons hung out.
Also cod fished there in the winter. Bunch of drunks hanging around a barrel fire. Catching market cod and shooting rats with 22's.
Urban fishing at its finest !

Yes,, the causeway to Moon Island is gated and guarded. But Squaw rock right before the gate can be accessed and fished (real shallow near low tide though). I don't see many rods bent when I cut through there. There is a pier at Marina bay in Squantum also, but not much seems to happen there either.

Wollaston beach is dead. Back when pogies were there was a different story. Nut Island in Houghs neck has a fishing pier that should produce, but is is popular.

Other than that head to the cape/canal.

Oh....also....be prepared.
Rents are really high for a nice place.
Take it from a landlord......

you don't need to go to the canal. There is an assload of 25'' fish holding in the area that would be a blast on the fly. If you fish at night and don't mind doing a little google earth/NOAA chart scouting you will find access to some fishy spots. Bigger fish are mixed in as well, but this year it is tough to get through those 7lbers.
