Most recent Reader Digest ...Mercury in Fish ....

Hi Striper Friends:

I read and got scared by the most recent reader digest about how serious the murcury level in the predator of the ocean.

Most victium consume a lot of fish. What do you guy think. May be we should always catch and release SB.

Raven 07-24-2003 02:17 PM

better to ask the fish and game department!

they perform the tests....and readers digest is an alarmist magazine that tries to scare senoir citizens mainly. A baby snow seal pup 10 minutes old out on the ice was grabbed and tested once in what looked like the purest spot on the planet and it was found to have traces of DDT in its blood. Sure DTT had been banned in the USA but not in 3rd world countries where their laws allowed it to still be sold so nothing is immune from pollution really. Whether or not stripers have high levels of say mercury in them could be anyone's guess and unfortunately theres no easy test yet to test the fish we catch. Most of the mercury is found i believe in freshwater fish man raised trout being the cleanest fish.

Oh, Brother.... .....did that fountain of misinformation have anything to say to these old folks about the amalgam (silver/mercury) fillings they have been carrying around in their mouths for the past 30-50 years?

Nah, didn't think so.......

Sure, certain fish my have some mercury as well as PCB's......but I never got any of the Omega 3 fatty acids that are so good for you from the metal that I have in most of my teeth.....

It's all relative............

I learned a trick to find out if fish is safe to eat when I was stationed in california-we used to go barracuda fishing out of redondo beach-put a chunk of meat on an anthill and see if the ants eat it-if they do then the fish is good.

Raven 07-24-2003 03:24 PM

ants

when i lived in the california mountains i always knew when it was gonna rain because the ants would have a real hurried pace trying to gather food before the rain came . it could be a clear blue sky but if the ants were running at double speed sure enough rain was expected and they were "Never" wrong.:D

I wouldn't take much stock in anything RD has to say.I put them in the same category as PETA...completely foolish.
Hmm.........all of a sudden I feel like some KFC.

Just got done chowing down on some extra crispy myself!

Notaro 07-24-2003 11:13 PM

it's unhealthy to eat so late at night. y'all dont wanna get a midcrisis age 20s. :D

ah heck....mercury in fish ...well unless thats all I ever ate...well then I would worry about it!

really think about it...red meat has its problems....chicken too...pork we wont go there.....so why not give fish its very own scary qualities too? I dont eat freshwater fish....but from the ocean I do, in fact its probably the healthiest thing we eat...our own fresh caught fish!....just think...even the salad mixes you by are preserved! so I am not going to stop eating fish now and then!

I could NOT eat fish and die tommorrow in a car accident -end of story...OR i could die twenty years from now after eating all kinds of things! at least I enjoyed it!

If you are worried about mercury in fish then eat the youngest fish possible. The younger fish have smaller traces of mercury. It is another reason to release that 50 pounder.:)

"even the salad mixes you buy".........

:smash: :smash: :smash: :yak:

Bit lazy there, Jenn? Buy your greens out of the bag, preferrably organic, wash them yourself.....better yet....GROW your greens, and wash them yourself.....

No offense, please.......just :smash: ing ya.....;)

So, is what you guys are saying is that I should start carrying an ant farm around with me when fishing? Nothin' like another piece of equipement to add to the gear list.

fishsmith 07-25-2003 02:00 PM

I think a couple of ants would suffice, a farm would be overkill.
