704Z modification for line roller?
 

I'm new here, perhaps I didn't use the search well.

I still fish a good ol' 704Z. It's MPU (70's style with the carbaloy roller), simply drilled to expel water and sand, and I use the side plate from a greenie which is metal.

While the crosswind could be improved, the line lay doesn't bother me as much as the line roller. I would love to modify the arm assembly and put a 706 roller with bearing on my 704.

All in all, doesn't look too hard to do conceptually with some aluminum angle, but I don't have a bridgeport, and the the roller needs to bury into the arm or the line will catch on the shoulder.

Any thoughts on this, contacts for the machining application would be much appreciated.

Maybe I should add...should I even worry about this? Does it matter that the roller doesn't really turn well with fireline and especially braid?

I had some trouble with getting info from his web site. A quick google gave me some more info.

Sounds like a perfect match for I'm looking for. Actually, I might ask him about that crosswind/traverse arm as well.

I am already on it taking dimensions from the original 704 arm with provisions to make the roller end larger to accommodate the counter bore for the roller to be recessed into the arm .

All I can say is thank you to everyone and especially Dave Ri for taking this on.

Hey Dave, make me one also. I have at least 7 704 greenies and 4 704Z. I usually fish my VS200 in the surf but I'm an old guy who is old school and still love 704s.

I will make a few for you guys to try if you like them we move on . I am very busy right now with pre season service so i will get on it asap . I have a few old 704 arms that will be sacrificed in the development stage but i am hoping this will workout . I look forward to working with all here .

You can still get these at a few locations. Not sure if the 706 roller would fit on them.

These MPU kits use the 704 roller with no bearing. You cannot put the 706 roller onto the arm as the shoulder wouldn't be buried in the arm and the line will catch.

The 704 roller just doesn't turn well with braid at all. Slightly better with fireline. Not sure it even really matters, but it is something that has always bothered me, and I would prefer not to find out the hard way.

The 704 roller works just fine with mono, but I cannot see myself going back to mono anymore.

Yes Billy, the arm is new, it's kept as close to the original as possible to fit the same. It is lengthened and then milled to accept the 706 roller with bearing. Made of 304 stainless. Dave Morton of Beavertail rod and reel (Dave RI) did the work.

Definitely improves braid line management on the 704.

I wonder if Dave had any request to convert a VSB to a MPU .

He can make you an arm with a 706 roller for your 704. He does other things as well. He can put in an IAR for instance. He is a tool maker by trade so he can do the IAR mod with high precision and he hardens the shaft to handle it. Feel free to pass on his information. 710 will be in the works soon and perhaps a crosswind modification to improve line lay on the 704.

He has a CNC machining center and can do very high precision work. He does all kinds of repairs on rods and reels and he is a local guy in North Kingstown. So if you may have other things you want to do, give him a call.
