Woods Hole striper fishing

Got out on BB this weekend. Stopped at Cleveland's ledge on the way out, scored some sea bass, and....had our net blow over board. Just before we could get there, it went bottom up and sank...blub blub blub.

So, anyway, we went to Woods Hole and proceeded to hook up a nice 30+ inch SB, got him to the boat and put my hand in his mouth (no net, right?), and....snap! Adios fish! Ho! Ho! Ho!:laugha:

Managed to bang the boat on a green can in that 6 knot current too- kloong! (Wow!). Fortunately, no damage.

Been there and done all that, worse even. I once tried to land a medium bluefish my 4 year old son had hooked on 8# mono no leader by using another plug held in my hand to snag the hook on the plug the fish had in its mouth. Not good. Ever watch a tired fish swim away with TWO of your plugs?

I never carry a net unless fluke fishing.
For Striped bass, use a 30-40#leader and you can swing stuff under 20 lbs aboard or carefully slide your hand down the line and lift the fish in by the head of the plug.
Carry a small lip gaff for bigger fish.

Done the buoy thing several times as well. Those things look huge when you are two feet away and about to slam one while unhooking a fish.

No fish in Woods Hole except in the aquarium - move along - nothing to see here :D

I've never fished woods holes, but it looks damn fishy and crazy currenty, would never attempt it in a kayak

It is in my back yard and I stop to take some casts almost every time I go out but it is not a pleasant place to fish and VERY difficult to fish efficiently (at least with plugs) so, unless you run into a blitz, you can usually do better down the Elizabeths.

You can't fish it from a kayak because of too much current and large boat traffic. You're better crossing near slack tide, cutting through Hadley's (or paddling along Nonamesset) and accessing Lackey's Bay for kayak stuff.

It makes the canal look like a mill pond current wise. I would listen to what George says he has pet names for all the rocks.

If I get two casts per drift I feel lucky and even luckier that I didn't smash into something
Interesting area... The best part is if I've fished it that means I've just fished or going to fish the islands,,, sooooooo beautiful

Thst whole stretch is drop dead beautiful. Throw eels all night and fluke half the next day. Couple large coffees and autobozo drive home.

Yeah, but, man! when those albies are in!!! I'm finally, finally, getting my yak ! and I can't wait.... one of the perks about working down here!
My biggest bass came from the hole, i was drifting eels from a friends boat, and managed to get a 28lb'er. But it that current it felt much larger.
