Day trip to the block

My wife and I are taking the ferry to Block for the day. Are there tackle shops on the island and where are they in relation to the ferry. Also does any one know a good reasonably priced place to eat on the island? thanks charlie

I always get lunch at the block island grocery store. Reasonable prices.

BI fishworks and Twin Maples. TM may have some GRS but not sure. It is fairly far. You taking bikes?

tattoobob 07-20-2016 06:25 PM

BI Fishworks is never open, Twin Maples is a good shop but a bout 3/4 to a mile from the ferry, you will need transportation to get to the really good fishing spots

Which ferry are you taking?

Thanks for the heads up. I always go to the grocery store for coffee and pastry, will have to hit that spot. It's open late in the season.

I think it closed around Columbus Day last year.

They are very good. Used to have the most attractive summer help too but not any more. It closes Columbus Day like you said.

Don't know what you are looking for regarding food but if you just want to grab a sandwich, Old Harbor Takeout is fine. Three Sisters is good for a sandwich too. If you want waitress service, Poor People's Pub and Kimberly's are reasonable for the island. All are within walking distance to the ferry.

Glad you did. I was on the neck and we did not have power for most of Saturday because a generator blew and caught fire on Friday night. The business district was spared.

You'd think they would have a solar farm by now

Actually there is wind farm going up 3 miles off the S/SE side of the island. The island is now connected to the mainland via underwater cable and it should start getting electricity from the mainland in 2017. No more pristine view from the south side and some unwanted artificial light. It was the best place for stargazing.

Isn't that the truth! The south side of the Block never had ambient light.

It is the most amazing place for star gazing. I have seen a few things that i cant explain on the new moon. No other place like it on earth.

South side was inspiration for "Black as Coal"

{It was a very dark night, the kind I like. I refer to them as "Black as
Coal" nights. No artificial light of any kind. The kind of darkness only
experienced far out at sea away from the nighttime glow of civilization.
The Cape and the Islands come to mind. Surfcasters know of these
nights. The kind of night where you have to touch your plug after each
cast to check for weed. The kind of night you retrieve the barrel swivel
of your leader into your rod tip.}
