Aluminium boat
 

Thinking about getting a small aluminum boat to poke around the plum island sound area (which is large inlet area that doesn't usually have large swells, but the current is extremely strong which only makes it fishable to me on certain tides in the kayak). I'm thinking it would open up the entire marsh system to me..

I see a lot of starcrafts and lunds in driveways around my town. the thing is I would prefer a steering wheel and some kind of console as opposed to just sitting in the back at the motor

Do you guys think something like this is worth it? this would be my first foray into boating outside of the kayak. If so, what are some things to look out for in used ones? About how much is reasonable to spend on something like this and how big (or small) should I go?

used boats in RI? hmmmmmm... Paperwork on everything.

Many of the lower priced used boats I have seen on Craigslist, have title for the hull (usually matches the boat), if there's a title for an outboard (often numbers don't match) and possibly stolen trailers, no paperwork but registered as "homemade".

No matter what the price it's not worth it if you can't title and register it legally.

Tinnys are great. Low maintenance, u can bump them off rocks in skinny water. Go for it

There's one in Ipswich at the gas station on Topsfield Rd. I wouldn't go less than 16'. I bet you can find a 16' side console for $2-3k, but it's probably going to need some work. Now's the time of the year to talk cash with guys.

yeah that's the main attraction for me! How do you guys that fish rocky areas in your expensive boats not have a heart attack?

I have been running a 14 foot tin boat for 28 years now. I am pretty sure I just sold my bigger boat and i will be back to the tin. I love it. Much prefer the tiller. Crappy ramps no ramps no problem. Launch in 2" of water. No maintainence. Easy trailering. No down side IMO other than sometimes you can't go out but on light wind days you can go way out. I will be out looking for albies on Friday morning in it.

I truly enjoyed mine ....But since the depletion of a descent amount of holdover fishing .& Denis not wanting to use it to go out front .........Its been sitting way too long ............. side for a couple of digging trips ...............is it time to let it go ???? like 10 hours on the motor /less than 5 on the Garmin combo unit ><><>

I had the rear quarter of the hull professionally reglassed last year , due to pin holes popping up from battery acid . all wiring works .comes with a areator built in , but its disconnected cuz I didn,t want to hit a swich and then find out I have boat full of water

poking around on CL, looks like $5K would get something that doesn't need a lot of work, so I may have to wait a little bit to put that cash together..

I,d need to get at least 5k to sway me to let it go /Its not a money issue ..I paid over 5K for just the motor & i didn,t even have a chance to rip the lower unit off :kewl:

I had a 14 ft grumman, then upgraded to a 20' Lund before I got a fiberglass boat. Both boats were great in Narragansett Bay. Even the lund can take some seas out front. Pick your days and you can go quite far. If I had never caught a tuna on someone's elses' boat, I'd probably still have a tin for the ocean.

I've got a 12 ft aluminum on a trailer wit a 6hp 2 stroke me and my son's use on the fresh water lakes in our town.
Best thing about it, Cost me 0 to run !

I had a 16' Princecraft for many years for duck hunting and fishing in the Bay. Use to launch in Bristol and fish all around Hog Island. It had an old 35hp Merc 2s. Only problem was that it was difficult to tip up as it had no power trim. Caught a LOT of fish on that boat!

Had a new 13 foot whaler trailer donated to me this spring (no paperwork), which had only been used to move the boat to the yard to crane it on board a 60 footer. A friend ended up with it and I converted it to a yak trailer and had no issue registering it has homemade, in fact when I tried to register it with a BOS from my friend, they told me to get out of line and write homemade on the next pass thru and not submit any BOS. This was for a MA registration and transfer of my center console plate.
