Good read.

FYI

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission voted yesterday to increase the allowable Menhaden catch by 6 to 7%. Could have been worse I suppose. Judging by lack of comment or concern on the internets, very few even care.

Yes. Was hoping they would let the positive trend continue for few more years before potentially sabotaging the comeback. Won't be surprised if they raise it again to get back to the 20% they cut back a few years ago. It's almost there now. There is no doubt that it was effective from my point of view. Haven't seen as many peanuts and adults as I've seen this year in a very long time.

Vote to maintain current levels went down like this:

ME: No
NH: Yes
MA: Yes
RI: No
CT: Yes
NY: No
NJ: No
PA: Yes
DE: No
MD: No
Potomic River: No
VA: No
NC: No
SC: Yes
GA: Yes
FL: Yes
National Marine Fisheries Service: No
Fish and Wildlife Service: Yes

Then they voted for the 6 whatever % increase. A modest increase, but almost back to where they needed to make the original 20% cut. So, the usual 'over fish, try to repair and recover, over fish' cycle will continue. smh

Problem is the latest stock assessment shows the population is healthy and they asre not overfished and no overfishing is occurring. I find the CT vote very hypocritical They have almost no quota so they are counting the directed bait fishery as "bycatch."
