long winter
as I get a bit older I don't mind the winters off as much as I used too but every once in a while you have to fish. we took a trip on the island current yesterday for some winter codfishing. we had a pretty light load of anglers, prob 18 guys, and our group of 4 had the whole port rail to ourselves and it was nice and spread out. we roll up to the first spot and the fleet is all converging on a pile of fish. a half dozen party boats from RI, Montauk, Niantic and a half dozen downeasts were out there and the Viking 5star. the francis fleet was there and racked and stacked with guys. the bite is decent for a few hours and then shuts down. the fleet disperses and we bounce around the rest of the day and grind out a few fish here and there. the weather was pretty good and I ended up with 8 fish and missed the pool by 1 fish. my bigger fish were full of partially digested herring. good day, lots of laughs and a bunch of fillets. now if we can just get some ice

if it gets any warmer I'm gonna stop "winterizing" the boat....

This winter has not ben so bad - not sure how much is getting older (as you said ;) and we are roughly same age) and how much is busy and mild / lack of snow.

Last winter I picked up a pair of snow shoes that I would love to "have" to use again this season, but that's not a priority. I just love getting out and getting some fresh air and fish! |
Before I picked up golf again and had winter hold overs to target, I'd be loving a winter like this. Now I'd rather play golf and get some exercise and wait until March to hit some freshwater fishing. Teeing it up in Hyannis tomorrow.

Too: Something went off in my brain. I do some work in Addiction Medicine. I just had to catch a fish; so I relapsed for the first time this New Year. We still have open water on the Cape.

Phew! That's a beauty, congrats

Remembering the massive caterpillar invasion last year and them saying it was caused in part by a dry winter not allowing some moss or something that helps control the damn caterpillars from growing, I hope we have a nice long winter with plenty of snow.....

In a way i look forward to the winters. Im in Vermont most weekends and I look forward to the winter surfing. Between surfing and snowboarding the winter flies by. Then before you know it your spring commisioning the boat and getting the gear ready. I love NE and the seasons.
