Stick Shadds

For those of you that fish them - what's your go-to size and sink rate for canal and non canal situations? Any pointers would also be appreciated.

ProfessorM 04-18-2017 03:35 PM

Slow sink. White. Flag on rear. Largest size. Belly hanger to Heavy split ring to swivel to heavy split ring to hook.

Thanks Paul. Are you using that setup primarily in the canal?

Yes.canal is perfect for that lure style. I primarily use it in current. I know guys that will use it on beach too but it never interested me much would rather use something else but I could be missing the boat on that.

I've done well with a white slow sinker in the 182 size from the beach in certain conditions.

How does the new version compare to the old version?

Hmm deep water or fast current?

Very Little current in fairly shallow water.

Had some success with them but for the most part, schooled by the masters ;)

Hi Greg - have not used the new one yet.

JohnnySaxatilis 04-30-2017 07:10 AM

I use them everywhere. I like the floating the best because of the shallow beaches. The new ones are cheaper and come with better hooks. But I've only seen the slow and fast sink on the shelves this spring. Hope they didn't get rid of the floating version

Last I heard they weren't doing a run of floaters...which is unfortunate...

Nice - do you fish them rigged with only one belly book (as demonstrated by Dave Anderson)?

JohnnySaxatilis 04-30-2017 08:12 PM

I typically just fish them with both trebles but I'll upgrade the hooks to Vmcs. 2/0 for beaches and 3/0 for canal on the middle size version. Almost everyone takes the back hook off or swaps it for a dressed siwash though. What's great about them is all the different ways you can retrieve em.

only place I have found them is in the canal
thankfully they float so I am grateful to those who lose them.

that sucks if they are not making them in ghost floating
I am down to my last 2 but I do have 2 others that would need repair as the belly hanger is gone on one and the weight is loose in the other

I fish those with trebles

White spray paint will transform any color into what you want.

As long as you want white to be the color 😉.

ProfessorM 05-02-2017 06:20 AM

Why would you want it any other color😊

That new mackerel pattern looks pretty good too.

I had one ghost floater from a number of years ago. Got a few fish on it but traded it for something. I had one great day at the canal with stick shads but it was a 1 off day or something, I have better success with other options. That was when i fished the canal a lot, didnt make it there once last year.

ProfessorM 05-03-2017 09:08 AM

I would take a magic swimmer over a stick shad any day and twice on Sunday.

piemma 05-03-2017 09:59 AM

I fish them with just the belly treble. Tony O gave me the tip of taking the back hook off entirely and he was spot on.

ProfessorM 05-03-2017 08:05 PM

I don't know anyone who fishes them with anything but a belly treble. I would also suggest a flag on the tail.

I do - but I don't fish the canal. I fished them last fall on Block - really impressed by the results - especially in heavy surf and wind conditions when your presentation options are few. Tried the one belly treble on a swivel rigging option but didn't like how it cast in the open surf. Stayed with the two treble option recommended by Pat Sebile and
hook-up ratio improved. Looking forward to fishing them heavily this season - like having a new toy in the bag ;)

ProfessorM 05-04-2017 09:16 AM

Yeah I would think they would shine in snotty conditions. Good to hear about the hook set up too. always learning.

Paul is the magic swimmer master...

I'd take a stick shad over a magic swimmer only because they're more versatile in different conditions, which is basically what Dennis eluded to....
