Great White Attacks

Just watched an interesting documentary on Nat Geo Wild about the 4 mass great white attacks in recent years, one of which happened right off Manomet Point in Plymouth, which I can see from my upper windows and a beach we swim at frequently. Interesting to hear the two girls story and they are lucky all that GW tasted was fiberglass. One reason I bought my Kayak in yellow, not many seals have yellow belly's.

Ban seal hunting and eventually mother nature will provide the ample food source to bring them in close. Ironic that the movie Jaws was filmed locally and now those same beaches are being patrolled by GW's, making vacationers think twice about a swim off Ballaston Beach, where one of the attacks happened. Bad enough you can have seals stealing your stripers right off your line, now you have to worry about GW's doing the same thing.

I watched as a guide talks about reaching down to land a fish, while a GW is working it's way up the fish and he jokes; you might be interviewing the one handed captain today. I was thinking you might be interviewing captain dumb arse, I'm pretty sure I don't care what I caught, if a GW is chomping it's way up the rack; I'm cutting the line or letting go.

Supposedly this happened in Warren Cove close to Browns Bank.

Was the 2 girls story about the 2 girls/women that wanted to get a closer view of the shark and purposely paddled up to it?
I recall a story last year about two "geniuses" that thought that was a good idea until the shark decided he wanted to check them out.

I would bet that the first legitimate shark attack here in New England (excluding the older records) will be on someone that specifically swam/paddled out to "see the sharks" and thought they were in no real danger.

As for kayak color, it may not make much difference when the shark is attacking from below and is charging the surface. They are focusing on the shadow/shape silhouette and not the color.

Maybe if you attach a sticker to the bottom of your kayaks, wakeboards and paddleboards that shows a seal in a circle with a line thru it?

when I bought my first kayak to fish southern california. It was yellow.

The visibility to other boaters was important to me over concern of sharks.

Whne I showed up with it...all my friends laughed and asked...
"why Yum Yum Yellow?" I was informed that great whites liked yellow.

I never was attacked, but I must say a few outings paddling around
solo, I felt as if I were stalked. The hairs on my neck freaking out.
this photo from the same area I fished.

I would not worry about it too much. You can always paint your hull
some other color....if you think it makes a difference. I have seen
some surfers band their boards and wetsuits (zebra) to break their
silhouette, camo, or deter a tasting.

Yellow for visibility to boaters and coast guard if I ever needed it was the primary concern over any concern for sharks. The two girls were hit violently from below just off Manomet Point in Plymouth in 2014 and they were just out for a paddle according to the interviews.
