Frozen bait
5 gal bucket with shiners turns into a block... :-(
Any good ideas out there? |
I run my 35 gallon Kodiak bait tank with a 300 watt in line heater in the supply line to the canister filter for my weekly supply ..it lives in the garage a remote thermostat set to 40 keeps it at a good temp...my storage tank is a 55 gallon drum buried in the ground with a 300 watt pond heater...a good cooler is a good temporary home...I just take it to the extreme. .

unrelated to the bait but have seen black painted ping pong balls or hand ball to keep your holes from icing over ... not sure if anything will help with this cold .. and this blanket of snow will add new problems glad i never got the ice fishing bug

Thanks gents, more to it than meets the eye,,, :-) Headed to a pond today that I haven't fished in 50 yrs. +, it's a bit of a hike in pulling sled.... Another day in paradise ! :-) |
Here's one
Recently got two Bluetooth hearing aids thru the VA... Forgot to remove them, stocking hat has a tendency to dislodge them... On the ice for an hour or so, oops, left ear empty... Chit! Comes up with a brain storm, tried to pair the phone with the aid and it connects, walked around and it disconnects, kept doing this til I pretty much had a pefect circle of foot marks in the snow, walked to where I figured the center of my marks where and holy chit, looked down and there it was,,,, had another beer and got back to fishin! Go figure... :-) |

If you're asking what to do with the shiners, thaw the ice and fish them on the bottom for pike/pickerel bait.
If you're asking how to keep the bucket from freezing, get a battery powered aerator and use it while out on the ice. Ice can still form, but it won't freeze solid because the water will constantly be moving. Once you turn it off outside, the ice will form! I use one when I fish with minnows. (it keeps the bait active) |

Yes, got the picture now! :-) |
Baby Bubbles. It cost me less than 5 bucks at Walmart. Runs on 2AA batteries for 20+ hours. Keeps bait lively and ice free. I also have a styrofoam bucket inside the 5gallon bucket. Ive had shiners going on 3 weeks with only 3 dead.
