If rec's are responsible for 90 percent of striper removal due to catch, and release mortality then it seems that is where the problem lies. I'm not sure about the science though. Florida revived their fisheries with seasons and slot limits, we could do the same. As far as comms go instead of going by count go by weight and keep smaller fish and leave the breeders alone to breed. I would rather eat a 18" fish than a 40" fish. At one time we could do that!

Several problems. Recs don't kill 90% of the fish but it is still a high percentage. Recs kill some of the fish they catch in C&R and all the fish they keep. Comms kill all the fish the keep, and more if they are highgrading.

Personally I don't think anyone usergroup should suffer all of the consequences not all of the blame, but drastic changes need be done.

Drop Total Allowable catch by 70% and apply what rules are needed from there, whether slot limits or whatever.

Come to the ditch and watch the,(zero disrespect to our Asian friends). But they clean house by KEEPING EVERYTHING they catch and not to mention they bless us with all,and I mean ALL of there trash and gone .5 hrs. before sun up.

States do not see the value in protecting fish from being taken illegally... If they did, they would allocate funds for proper enforcement. as far as the current officers, it doesn't take Columbo to figure out where to go to find poachers. Give me a truck, a badge, a ticket book, and one afternoon.... I will make my rounds and hit bullseye 10/10 and generate more income in a single day writing LEGIT violations than some of these environmental police do in a month....

More than a grain of truth there. But your local EPOs have no choice as where they patrol and what they have to look for.

Add up all the fish taken by recs, commercial, Asians ect........ and that number is minuscule compared to the numbers of fish eaten by seals daily

Add up all the fish? You aren't referring to just striped-bass are you? Striped-bass is an occasional food source for seals. The research out there shows about 40% of their diet is sand eels, 20% hake, followed by flounder, skates, cusk eel, lobster, bivalves. Small percent of diet is herring, cod, striped-bass and similar.

All available data indicates that the overall impact of seals on the striped-bass population is minuscule compared to humans. Maybe not at specific back beaches, but the back beaches don't represent the coastwide population.

So last year was one of the first years in a long time the mass comm bass quota was not met.....hit 89%.

Yet the mass comm bluefish quota was only 40% met.

Where is the outrage for one of the greatest sport fish ever?

Half the problems about debating bass stock is the myth and mystique of striper fishing......it tends to cloud the facts.

How about local police being able to write tickets also and city or town gets to keep the revenue? All it would take is to pass an ordinance. Is it about the money or saving the resource? Agency turf war?

Yeah,

No kidding, why do we need to leave a 2" square piece of skin on a filet when coming in from the bank with haddock. An EPO should be able the see the difference between cod and haddock after filleted and skin removed. It is not that hard to do.

Most do not know how to measure a bass......i.e. you CAN take your hand and bend to top tail down to get the overall length. That is right in the rules.

Not true John, take a look at the chart I posted in the other canal thread, in 2017 recreational anglers killed 90% of the total fish killed.

But that percentage is based on interviews, surveys and the few actual physical fish that got counted.

And again, I'm not picking on you Mike, I just need to point that out.
It's a very high percentage for a guesstimated number.

A buddy was about to get ticketed a few years ago by an EPO for over the limit(he had 2 fish) and having an under sized fish. The 2nd fish was a bluefish...EPO couldn't differentiate the 2 fish...lol

Ha,I was boarded by the green cops between Block and Montauk and informed I was not allowed to fish for sea bass in that area.
