My Letter to the ASMFC
I attended the Open Comment meeting at the Mass Maritime Academy last Thursday, October 3rd.
I am in favor of the Proposal for Massachusetts: An 18 per cent reduction in catch effort (F) reduction for both the MA Recreational and the Commercial categories. For the ASMFC, MA Division, to propose or implement any different will just increase the animosity between these two user groups, both of whom seek a significant sized, or "trophy" striped bass. Only in the Recreational Sector is the biomass a potential reusable resource, with the rather massive 90 plus percentage C&R, by your statistics. Yes I understand the 9 percent release mortality impact. The Commercial Sector thrives only for kill. The Commercial sector has a dis proportionally larger contribution to catch effort (F), with their own culling, high grading, and increased effort driven by by profit. Individually, the Commercial License harvester is far more skilled and effective in harvest than the average Recreational fisherman. The Commercial harvest and sale of striped bass is a much larger driver of catch effort (F), than your statistics indicate, for the significant decline of the quality and quantity of this fishery. I wish to call to your attention to the Florida Snook Fishery and the regulations presently in place which have been so successful in salvaging this resource: There is a Closed Season (during the early summer) when the fish are spawning. When the season is Open, you can only kill a snook withing a very small Slot Limit of 28-32 inches. IF: a fisherman wishes to legally kill a snook within the Open Season, and within the Slot Limit, this fisherman must also be in possession of a special, purchased Snook Stamp. Finally, snook are a Game Fish; therefore, commercial sale of the species is unlawful under any circumstance. These are your tools for decreasing catch effort (F): Closed Season, Size Limits, Daily Bag Limits, Slot Limits, Special Licensing, No Commercial Sale; and finally, Enforcement. I know I do not need to tell you how to do your job. What I am asking of you is to DO YOUR JOB. I am 70 years old. Yes, recover this striped bass fishery; BUT ALSO PRESERVE IMMEDIATELY WHAT IS LEFT. I will not be alive for regulations to grow me another 40 pound beach bass from scratch. Alan E. Cordts, M.D. |

So true for MANY of us who LOVE the striped ones. |
They tell us there’s science behind the options stated at the meeting the other night, ok, so now they have reliable? stats and still all they come up with is size change...
It’s hard to believe that the fishery isn’t in dire straights as they suggest.... my freezer is empty :-( |
Gup turn the #^&#^&#^&#^&in thing around >> I saw more bass the last few days // many caught .some I just watched swim ><> but they continue to kill breeders .
we won,t be here ,,,but wait to the setup with Minn Kota .spot on /////////// I,ve seen a few setups & a couple of shows ………… it makes .. yo.yo , side scans , gps, internet , etc like ancient history ><> |
Why do you need to keep the fn things anyway ?
They aren’t that special for eating. Good jumbo cheeseburger beats it by a mile. 🍔 Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |

And fast food burgers s uck , that stuff will make you go blind and impotent I hear.... |
Bass is like lobster.
Most people can’t eat lobster without a cup of melted butter to drown it in. Bass plain is ultra bland, you need sauce and marinade to make it palatable. Tuna and swordfish you can pretty much grill it with minimal help and is excellent. I agree fast food burgers blow. Though I do wear glasses and never had a kid. Well, any that I’m aware of. 😬 I am just half ass playing around Gup. An awful lot of people I know take the time to put bass fillets in the freezer only to be tossed out a few years later. Baked in a small casserole dish with my famous cracker crumb topping... Even better, deep fried, with my famous breading.... Swordfish is my favorite though ,,, definitely need a bigger boat... :-) Fish frozen in vacuum bags keeps great, and when it’s been in there a while I just have the clan over for some of my famous fish... ;-) I always thought people went fishing to catch fish to eat along with the enjoyment of the outdoors when I was a kid,,, For me I still do.. :-) |

Some of us still do Gup ~ My family gets together numerous times a year for a good old fish-fry. 20-30 people deep sometimes... 90% of that fish comes from me and pops... matter of fact, he went rock-flipping this morning...followed by a couple of nice bucktoothed black-beauties. Nothing wrong with keeping your catch, so long as it's legal. What's worse, fishing for the sport or fishing for the feast? yep, we all have opinions. |
My freezer is full of probably 15-20 vacuum sealed bags of sea bass and tog, it’s a taste of summer all winter long.

I like B/K burgers & hate fish ….everyone is different :kewl:
Gup .no 28" fish up your way ???????? |
In days of yore,
In between the relentless bass fishing the outer cape, the beautiful fluke and big sand dabs I’d spear snorkeling 100 yards off hatches harbor. What good eats those were ! Btw.... I wonder how a deep fried cheeseburger would be ? Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |
