I’m sure the people who teach programming have some interesting opinions on that statement. And he’s the best hope the democrats have.

The man believes shoveling coal and writing code, require similar skills and intellect.

I'm not saying they're stupid. I'm saying that Biden is stupid (and you, for defending him), for assuming that the skills required to dig coal, are obviously and easily transferable to writing code. What could be more different? How does proficiency in one, suggest proficiency at the other?

anyone believe that if you can descend 300 feet into a mine, THAT means you can learn to write code? Anyone who has ever been in an elevator that goes down, can make a living writing computer code? How can anyone say something that stupid out loud? And you reddens it, because a democrat said it. If Trump said it, you’d have posted a 10,000 word essay written by one of the Young Turks.

Some coal miners might be brilliant at writing code. But no one can predict that, based on the fact that they go down an elevator shaft into a mine. That act, says nothing about one’s ability to write code.

Pete, if i applied for 1,000 jobs writing code, during how many interviews, would
my prospective employer say “I don’t care about your experience writing code. What we really need to know is, can you go down 300 feet and dig coal?”

The transition, with training can also be made to solar and wind energy jobs. The hardest hit are the boomers who aren't old enough to retire but aren't young enough to often have the skills inherent in the younger generation because of lifelong exposure to technology...

Pete, no one disagrees with Biden, that you can no longer mine coal and expect to be upper middle class. If he had stopped there, that would be fine. But he didnt stop there. He said that if you can dig coal, that translates into an ability to write computer code. That’s what is laughably absurd. Why did he pick writing code? What possible
correlation can there be, between writing code, and digging coal?

Try to expand your thinking, not every sentence and the meaning is black or white. Could be he meant to imply if you have the balls and determination to take on such a dangerous and inherently unhealthy job in order to support your family, that with training that same drive might be enough to learn skills that might result in a better living wage.

I’m far from a computer expert and that is an understatement, but when I started my hobby Ledge Runner Bait business back in the late 80’s, I just didn’t have the money to pay anyone to design a web site, so I picked up an HTML book for dummies and with some reading, lots of patience and trial and error, I think the web site turned out decent.

So yes Biden may have hinted, desire, training and patience might be enough, stretch your partisan brain and maybe you can read between the lines.

What does one’s ability to mine coal, say about one’s ability to write code? What’s the correlation?

Actuaries are as bright a group as i’ve ever encountered. So are doctors. That doesn’t mean that good actuaries make good doctors. And that’s not an insult to
anyone. Some jobs are so different, that being good at one, doesn’t predict the ability to be good at another. Many miners might make good programmers, but you can’t tell
that by virtue of the fact that they are miners.

Directly, probably few.
But the so called soft skills that are intrinsic to jobs absolutely translate between fields (organization, management, leadership, communication etc..)

I don't think anyone, Biden included is implying you walk out of the mine straight to a job writing code. But with the training and opportunities, many absolutely can transition to other careers. Models exist showing that it can work. Many of these folks went into mining because it was there and available. Not because their intellect was lacking or that their particular skills fit the job. That can translate to other fields.

Frankly, I find this a much more honest approach than Trump touting how he will bring coal back. That was a flat out lie. Ask Murray energy workers how that is going for them.

Hey what right do you have bringing common sense into a thread, I’m pretty sure that’s not allowed.

If we were to stop using coal or oil for energy purposes, would we totally stop the mining of them? We would certainly need a lot less. But what about all the byproducts that are produced from them? I'm not arguing one way or the other, but am genuinely curious about it. I suppose we could find other ways to make the products that are now derived from them. Or just replace those products with something else.

Two reasons I can think of.
1. There are existing models and programs where that exact transition has happened in that region.

2. Your average 37 year old miner out of work is not going back to undergrad pre med, then med school, then residency etc. to be a doctor. They probably can take on an associates or some equivalent training to get involved in a computer based industry, alternative energy etc.. This is a far saner approach for that region than 'We're going to bring back Coal'

Bryan, if you have evidence that "anyone who can shovel coal" can be taught to write code, what is it? I am stunned you're saying this. One profession is unskilled physical labor, one is purely intellectual, technical problem solving. Couldn't be more different. If every coal miner can learn to write code, who probably can't learn to write code? Anyone? If you were a high school guidance counselor, is there any kind of kid, and kind at all, to whom you would not suggest a career as a computer programmer?

If they could all write code, why aren't they doing that? Better money, much safer, better longevity, more stable. Coal mining seems to me, to be what people do, who have zero other options.





I don't see it as anything close to sane.
