Sharky

After getting 🦨 2 weeks ago while everybody near me was catching gbft I gave it another go today. A great crew and some hungry sharks provided all we needed for a fun day. We hooked 4 macos and at least 10 blue dogs. Trying to gaff a very large maco boat side ended up disastrously with a broken gaff and another ending up looking like a boomerang. Very dangerous critters will be dealt with accordingly in the future. 45 cal would have helped. Always a fun day but the E wind made the drift sporty as well as the ride in.

Does that mean no meat?

No meat
Each fish ultimately ended up chafing through the leader, the second while tail wrapped and wearing my gaff hook on his body after handily dominating Tattoo and myself. The leaders are 300# and 20’. Thinking of moving to 400

Sounds like fun. Would a . Harpoon work ? Only caught small ones not sure if they would penetrate were you around the dump or farther south..

Sea Dangles 07-17-2020 08:39 AM

We had the harpoon out for the second big one.
She came up tailwrapped and then went crazy for the bottom.
Tail chafed through the leader again!

That sounds like a fun day on the water! Must be an adrenaline rush when you get the big ones boat side.

a lot of work and excitement... expensive too.. still fun!... I've only hooked one mako, and it was on a hand line...I cut the line as soon as that thing cleared the water...

Hey, I am Nick. I love fishing too. It seems like you had great fun there.

It was a revenge day today for us as we were once again in a blanket of fog. The macos came boat side once again but this time we were able to subdue one of the beasts for the grill. Strange request I had from a local friend was asking for the shark fins which he will use to make soup.

You may want to consider a 12 gauge bang stick. I bought a head at a dive shop in Fort Myers. Great if you want to end mr. toothy. Not so good if you want to keep the jaw. Hole on one side you can put your thumb in on the other side hole you can put your fist in!

Sea Dangles 07-18-2020 06:25 PM

I used a similar method

How much meat did you end up with?

More than a bread box Ian
We did a better job with harvesting this one. They are delicious and certainly yield well.

Nearly as good as swordfish.

I am always curious the yield on sharks, only ever been the benefactor of meat from them, not the harvester

Nicely done

I will put a piece of yesterday’s mako against any swordfish that I have eaten.
Ian, open invite if you can get a day on your Falmouth vacation.

Thanks Chris, I’ll keep in touch. Unlikely with the little ones, but my mother in law will be with us so who the f knows...

Agreed on Mako, prefer that to Sword
