Offshore

I finally got around to shooting out to the canyons with the new boat. Although I was hoping to leave Friday, prior commitments left a departure time of 2 pm Saturday. We were 15 miles from Veach and were diverted to Atlantis for a troll which started at 6. There must have been 100 boats on the hotspot and when dusk came I worked away from the fleet for a couple knockdowns. It was great to put a lot of preparation and work to put some meat in the box before dark. Night came and so did the wind. Not good, pulled the plug and ran home at a less than fun speed.120 miles of waves over the T top later we cut up tuna! Tight lines

Damn. Must be nuts to be 40-60 miles offshore then bump into 100 boats like that. Sounds like a great trip. Someday hope to have a boat big enough to get further out

I was wondering what the return trip description was going to be, glad you made it back safe, even windier today

Glad you got out there, but picking your line through those seas in the dark is no fun... how was visibility and comfort at the helm? How many crew and how did they fare for the poke home? What was less than fun speed? Other boats run for the barn with you? You knew I would have lots of questions...

The only visibility was me seeing the instrument panel. I put a trail on and eased the throttle forward enough to occasionally get on plane, which is now 23 mph. Often times the sea pushed us back to 14. Long ride for me and Tattoo. My other friend ate an edible and slept the entire ride. I am grateful that the new ride has curtains but the spray washed over the t top for more than 5 hours in darkness. Not comfortable.... too old for that crap

Beanbag in the back corner.
To be fair, the beanbag is coma inducing to start with. But it got rough and I will be honest that it wasn’t comfortable at all. Night time compounds the problem. I had put the life raft on the front deck and had the ditch bag in arms reach which includes an epirb. I had made some long trips to Nantucket shoals and under Montauk but this is far. To make matters more concerning,on the ride down I saw a plume of smoke about 20 miles south of the Vineyard which looked like burning tires...turns out a big sporty lit up and burned to a watery grave. Bad juju

Chris, the trip back sounds incredible. Waves over the T-Top is not a pretty picture.

Beanbag in the back corner was my location in the old boat. I slept through solid 3-5' seas at 35kts... Still cant believe the ride of that 27'. So hearing this report only reminds us all that you must be prepared and aware out there. And a boat fire just drives the point home. I am definitely not ready physically for anything close to a 100 mile trip. Maybe next year. My goal for the fall is getting to BB for tog and albies! I still have a lot of catching up to do locally to get back in sync..... New boat sounds like a beast!

that sounds like a brutal ride home man. every once in a while a thorough ass kicking teaches you all sorts of lessons. good news is you know the boat can take it. that sportie went down in 5 minutes they said

Helen-H is a good alternative to the canyons. Website appears like she's running in the covid situation
