Let's talk chum

So I have done it all in terms of making your own. Grinding, freezing in old waxed OJ containers, etc. But we don't have a bait freezer, and I am not going to be allowed to have one. ( Better half has witnessed/smelled the results of one losing power and not being discovered for a week...not mine, by the way)

So a respected angler locally told me about Pro Fish Chum. Advertised as NO MESS - NO SMELL - NO ICE NO FREEZER - NO MIXING - NO HASSLE. He says he can dry and re-use it. No flies. Going to give their 10 lb. saltwater inshore blend a try. Anyone else try it or recommend something else?

Trying to generate some fishing discussions here......

Went to Maine with family for a week back in 80’s and on return realized my airator in the trash barrel in the cellar with my eels had crapped out, it was the end of bait in the house.

Ross any chance of working a deal with a local company with large walk in freezers with capacity to spare, maybe trade fish for space, pull what you need the afternoon before and keep in good cooler until the trip?

LOL,"no fun". Agree, lot's of fun until the arms gets tired from cranking manual grinder. With a powered grinder the fun would last longer.....until the cleanup.

Anyway, sharing my old recipe from the Oak Bluff's Monster Shark Tournament.

Fish On’s Kickass Chum

4+ Gallon batches

Ingredients:
1.5 gallons herring chum (ground herring)
2.0 gallons mackerel chum (ground mackerel)
1 tablespoon of glitter
1 quart fish oil
1 quart sand
1 pint oatmeal

Procedure:
Add 1.5 gal. herring chum to 5 gallon pail
Add 1 pint fish oil
Add 1 pint sand
Add 1 cup oatmeal
Add ½ glitter
Blend
Add 2 gal. mackerel chum
Add remaining ingredients while grinding mackerel, blend as you go
Add 1 pint fish oil
Add 1 pint sand
Add 1 cup oatmeal
Add ½ glitter

Mix batch until homogeneous

Place in 2 gal. freezer bags or 4 gal. square pails to be frozen.

Guaranteed to bring in the monsters!

I don't fish enough, Bob. I will give this a whirl and go from there. Aside from chumming cut up pogies, all I have had to do in recent years was carry cans of cat food just to bring in the mackeral... Or drift below someone else's slick. Don't do charters or tourneys, nor fish commercial, so demand just isn't what it was for having chum brought onboard. Maybe this freeze dried concoction will do the trick. As I said, I respect this guy and know he doesn't tolerate skunkings well at all...

Most likely Ricky is the only one that “gets it”.... I’ll bet this will even stump the Clam Man

cUMMING
One of the owners of ARK BAIT / the only real local
pogie boat for the last 40 years .died last fall .

the other owner descided to sell

it was bought by someone in New Bedford . who has a setup to grind them up & flash freeze them in a size that works for the lobsterman :eyes:

tons of mackerel & pogies always worked for us ><><>

I got this style from bassmaster. It took me 5 years to figure out that he was super-smart and not a psycho.

The stooges LP is one of my favorites. It also set the table for many of my favorite bands. I don't personally know Dave, only know of him outside of his posts from friends who know him. I always enjoy when he pops up. Maybe hisv ears will be ringing and he will materialize.
