CT Boat Trailers

Any of you in CT and have gone through the process of buying a boat trailer (this might be specific to a private party sale.)

I’m looking at one in Greenwich which is registered in NY state but owner has registration and title, so the typical nightmare of CT boat trailers should be a non issue with the DMV.

I do however need to get it from Greenwich to my house, and I can’t tell if there is any kind of temporary registration option with the state that lets me do that. Given that it’s 2hrs away, I’d prefer to do one trip to see it, pay for it, and bring it home.

Not sure if you guys have any advice...

Ian u may want to contact DMV or ck their online FAQ. Another is to check with a trailer dealer in ur area to see what they say.
I dont know but temps may be available especially coming form out of state but u need the title paperwork . Sorry i dont have more precise info . Good luck

From one state to another you may need the bill of sale notarized or title,,, I hate the DMV... :kewl:

Luckily the guy who is selling it was able to order the title, so for once I won’t have to fight that part of the CT DMV. Appreciate the idea of local trailer dealer Billy, solid direction to point me in.

Don't know if this helps but we recently got a boat and the appt. w/DMV was like 2 months out. So we left the title and appt. notice in the boat and just used it. The person at DMV said police where aware of delay at DMV and taking that into acct.

What Pete said... I'd bet unless the cop is a &^%$ most would let you go if you showed that you just purchased it and are only trasporting it home. At least that's what I've told myself

Yeah, that’s not as bad point

Don't you get a 7 day window after purchasing to get it registered? If you have a bill of sale in hand while driving home, I don't see any reason to worry at all?

This is the thread I’ll show the cops alongside that bill of sale :)

The guy still has the plates, so he’s going to let me drive it home with that and then mail them back

The 3 times I've purchased boats and or trailers in ct (in or out of state) I've driven the trailer home as long as the lights work I wouldn't sweat it even if stopped with a legitimate reason like just purchased. Esp now with covid rules at DMV. Took 2 months for registration turnaround for me this year.
