Fishing with BoyScouts
I am an Assistant ScoutMaster for Troop5 Scituate.
Some of the kids (and adults) would like to go on a charter boat. I am thinking that with a crowd of 10 or so we may be better off walking the shores and surfcasting. Right now I am just in the information gathering phase... ... phases? I don't do phases... Some have gear, most do not. Some gear doesn't catch fish (mine  ) For most campouts we collect $15-30 for food and/or fees per. So I would be looking at something like that. We are also a non-profit so you could write off any or all non-collected fees as a donation...(hint hint hint) Plus it could be good advertising. Any suggestions or things I should consider before I volunteer to chair this event? |
Mike, I think you might be better off on a charter. Many of the kids don't have gear and even if they do, what kind of shape would it be in? You'll spend the better part of the day fixing their tackle. With a charter, you'll still be helping to untangle messes, but you'll also have the added bonus of gear and mates to help out with. And, in the long run, more of the boys will probably end up catching fish and having a good time. If it were me, I'd consider bringing them on a Scup or bottom fishing trip where they're almost sure to keep busy catching. The other thing you wouldn't have to worry about as with shore fishing would be some of them getting bored and wandering off. Just my thoughts. Sounds like a good idea though to get them involved in the fishing.
Good luck. |
SCOUTD
I'm Asst. scout master troop 53 Mattapoisett and I've done the fishing thing with the kids on the beach- absolute mad house !
Next trip was on a scup boat ,they provide the gear bait and you have the mates to help you out with all the backlashes and tangles and your gear stays in one piece . Check out Capt johns in Plymouth for cod thier close and reasonably priced .Who knows tell then your scouts the might cut you a deal. Good luck Jim |

I was once an assistant scout master also..we went on the capn. john's...all had a great time and most caught fish...the scouts are all contained on the boat which makes your time more enjoyable..plus they supply all the gear & bait...on the down side if a couple of scouts get sea sick.... :yak: :yak: good luck
