Sorry to hear of the loss of your friends Wayne.
I really don't have much planned this weekend. Working a ton of hours lately so I think I am going to slow down a bit for the weekend.

Remembering my Father-in-Law...........first generation Portuguese American...drafted into the Air Force at age 19.....fought in the Pacific WWII .....aerial gunner on a B17....27 bombing missions.......survived a fiery runway crash that killed part of his crew. Married a girl he met while stationed in Texas.
He once told me ....the navigator on the plane was considered the most important person on the crew.........too many flights never returned safely do to lack of fuel.

piemma 05-30-2021 11:57 AM

Nobody cares when we served back in 66.

hq2 05-30-2021 12:02 PM

Yes, I remember. Never forgot how poorly Vietnam veterans were treated back then. Totally unfortunate to have to fight a very unpopular war; a great historical wrong.

Very sorry to hear this Wayne. The pain needs to be beaten or beaten away, and the options are truly dangerous. The stuff on the street is brutal and just getting worse.

Godspeed for your comrades.

Thank You for your service.... a lot of of us do care.
Back in '67 I was too young to serve or be drafted but my older brother signed up for duty.

There was a guy from my neighborhood, who we all looked up to, he was born in Sao Miguel, Portugal. Fastest, strongest and most athletic guy I'd ever met. He enlisted in the marines in '66.....sadly shortly after his deployment to Vietnam, he was killed in action.

As always miss ya Buddy, and yes you are always remembered for that political war.
We all would be speaking a different language if it wasn't for your generation.

Wish you well.

Paul, I hope that is a statement about the past, and not what we as Americans feel today.... You know some of my history. But in 1966, I was nine years old, and more concerned with getting a banana seat and chopper bars for my bike... I cannot fathom how you and your comrades dealt with arriving home in uniform and getting the disrespectful treatment you received. Nor can I accept the lack of follow up by the military for our troops currently being brought home and being expected to reassume their civilian roles without help. Wayne, my thoughts are with you and all who lost and are losing comrades, family members. I am off to the local cemeteries to pay my respects ahead of the services this morning.

Well said Ross,I thought that the Banana seat and ape hangers is pretty accurate for the time frame.

Hope that all is well and take the day in stride.

How did that burn go in the rain, Paul?????:bgi:

MAKAI 05-31-2021 01:21 PM

I take daily care of my elderly Dad.
Korean War vet, Marines. He never really spoke much about his time over there. The last few days he did, telling me about his friends who lost their lives there. His eyes were red rimmed and teary, as mine.
I can’t imagine what the young men and women of all wars experienced. I’m forever grateful for all who have and will serve. You are the best of us.
Thank you.

Real well. I had been waiting for a heavy rain. Pile was about 30' in dia and 10' high. Couple of gallons of diesel and you can get anything to burn.

It is odd you said that . I was speaking to the wife about the same thing it wasn’t really till 9/11 happened that it became fashionable to thank service members for their service. Or even care about are living conditions . Now sadly it’s become a political football who can love the military more than the next guy

When I was in the Marines 84-88 many considered if you joined you were just to dumb to anything Else. But the reality was I couldn’t afford to go to college .

Also Thanks you all for the comment regarding the guy in my unit who OD

Semper Fi Wayne. Love you brother.

Guppy 05-31-2021 07:10 PM

You guys got me going..... mid late sixties, me and buddies are are on are bar stools as usual:-) ,,,, it’s Friday after work and on the tv there the news about an anti war rally at 4C’s ,,, someone pipes up and says let’s go beat on some college kids.... some of are buddies was over there and a couple of us me included had our draft notices,,,
Off we went the next morning, beer cans flying out the windows, going way too fast, blew a tire just before a bridge abutment and thought for sure that the end,,, just missed it!
The rest of the day went like that,,, fist fights, cops ,,, and beers...

Sorry for the long story, thinking of the friends I lost.... I’m sure you’ll agree they are no less deserving than any, any that have served in any war....

Amen :-)

Piemma, thank you for your service. Today always reminds me of the lifeguard at Dunes Beach when I was about 8 years old in 1962 or 63. Carl Myllymaki. He would pay me 25 Cents to help him pick up trash at the end of the day. He could carry two trash cans at the same time! I thought that a tremendous feat of strength. He was KIA while giving his replacement a tour of the area 10 days before he was supposed to rotate home. Carl's brother was my bball coach and always road me hard, knowing that I was one of Carl's kids at the beach...
Anyway, I always am proud of those who serve(d). My nephew was just promoted to Colonel in the Corp; and his son is a Marine PFC. Very proud of them too... thanks for listening, and a toast to all that serve.
