Kill switch Lanyard
 

Anyone using a kill switch lanyard that they like maybe something with a buckle clip attachment?

I lengthened mine, and addd a medium sized carabiner so I can hook it on my life jacket or even a belt loop or suspender of my Grundens, it's long enough to make a loop so I can put it on my wrist and drop it when I dock... figured that out after killing the motor twice while docking because I forgot to un hook it.

Did the same when I had my boat Joe.

I be lying if I said I use the thing often, only when alone running to a spot at night or low visibility, but not while chasing fish! .

was looking into the MOB+ Wireless Man Overboard System there a bit steep but have some advantages

unless your <26' boat was built after January 1, 2020 you do not have to abide by this law. (Not saying it isn't a bad idea, but I am not going to be doing that all the time...)

So, if I am solo, which is 90% of the time, and rough, I am wearing an inflatable PFD anyway. Especially early in the year when the water is cold. If I need to pee, one hand on the console grab bar. I have scuppers, so I have just gone on the deck sole if really rough and windy.

So, know the regs, AND what is required equipment. Don't let over zealous enforcement take place. I am not trying to be an azz, just saying I have always taken conditions and safety into consideration whenever I am on the water, and especially alone. If I go over, it likely will be after a heart attack or seizure. Just saying.... YMMV.

Ross what Make/model inflatable do you have, I see a lot of them have a manual pull tab in what seems like an area that could get accidentally pulled. Maybe I'm also imagining either of my kids trying to hang off it because they do that anyways.

Yes they can, I've hooked the pull tab on my Mustang inflatable twice I. About 15 years.

Ross, i installed the kill switch on mine 10 years ago, and my boats a 1977, because I fish alone, and at night, I figured it just might be to my advantage. I also believe the law only applies above headway speed..

I think about this kind of stuff all the time, but also saw/read this story recently of an angler fishing offshore alone who got comfortable and took his life vest off, went to relieve himself and lost his footing and went in. His boat (in gear) was trolling off without him... which renewed my own interest in making my Killswitch lanyard easier to clip on.
I ended up getting a buckle clip. One end has a stainless carabiner with a low resistance retractable & female buckle, and the other a male buckle to a stainless split ring.
It may afford me a little extra length before it pulls the kill tab.

Also while out over this past Sunday, my 6 y/o wanted to move us from the end of our drift to the beginning of it because he has figured out the electronics. So my dad was next to him at the helm and he was steering and checking his path on the electronics, I moved behind the leaning post to clean the fish blood off the deck, while my dad coached the new Capt while doing 5mph.

I stood up and saw the photo opportunity, and while I was looking for the camera button, my son on his own decided he wanted to go faster, which made me take a quick step back before my dad corrected the move. I'm glad it happened because now there is a lesson that I can teach and reinforce to my son every time we go out.

Wayne, it is $200 for the MOB set up for one user. That will be considered money well spent by the third time I over reach my lanyard and the engine shuts off. I have never clipped in and previously used a wire tie to bypass the system for ten years.....

Yes it’s only 1 person there are others with multiple wearers .. but it’s like a life jacket if your not wearing it doesn’t do much . I wear an automatic PFD . I think another safety must for a boat is a swim ladder . Because if you do go in if it colder water or you need to swim to catch up to your boat.. most people wouldn’t be able to get back on board !

I wear my kill switch and life jacket when I'm going out alone. When I go with another person I make sure they know how to operate the boat.
I agree with Wayne....swim step and boarding ladder is a good safety feature.

I got the MOB this spring, but haven’t been able to wire it in yet. Will be doing that on vaca next week.

The unit lets you connect 4 fobs (but only comes with 1).

ACR also makes a similarly priced option with slightly different fringe features. Both seemed like good ideas for modern kill switch options

I’ll report back…

I will say that I got the MOB because my old Johnson 2 stroke has no existing kill switch beyond the old BRP style of “if the lanyard pops off, it twists the key to shut off the engine” and I don’t like that style.
