Bonito
I'm renting a cottage right on the ocean. Couldn't bring my boat so been kayak fishing for the last three days....caught about a dozen striped bass and a couple sea bass ....but today I focused on Bonito... saw them....got in close enough times to make good casts but no takers...saw a lot of boat guys on them

Probably more likely False Albacore. I have been chasing them for the last month. So much fun.

I haven't fished from the kayak in a long time until this vacation..really enjoyed it
..... went out again before sunset today and landed a Spanish mackeral......was in an area of feeding fish with some boat guys earlier in the morning and guy in a small boat next to me landed a bonito..... a friend texted me a picture of an albie he caught in woods hole today....from the balcony I here ....facing the water I can see a large area of Buzzards bay....fish blowing up on bait in all directions...in the clear water I can see clouds of bait pods floating by the cottage in constant droves....fun couple of late summer daze Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |
We’ll that’s a good sign some alberts showed up. Might need to go take a look mid week. haven’t seen bones or albies 1 time this year

I had three straight days of beautiful weather.... enjoying a long weekend stay at a summer home right on the water. Brought the kayak and fished from it several times a day......found myself right in the middle of feeding fish almost every where i went....caught a lot of small stripers and sea bass....at one point I saw a bonito jump clear of the water right next to me....paddled in the direction I saw them surfacing and made casts into them several times but didnt hook up. Put on an epoxy jig....but from the kayak I had trouble making any casts long enough....forgot how difficult it was casting from the sitting position in a kayak.....frustrated I switched to a metal jig that went much further and finally hooked up....but to my surprise it was not bonito or albie...but a spanish mackeral. Came back to shore exausted and sunburned...but when I tried to relax on the deck....would see more schools of breaking fish and was compelled to launch and chase. Wife and kids were amazed at my energy and stamina......after all.... I am a senior citizen now.:o

Thanks......the place is amazing.......if I owned it I would rig a trolley and winch to launch my 17' boat right there.........well ....in my dreams anyway. The Spanish Mackeral was easy to fillet and made a delicious meal. |
That looks perfect. Enjoy

Thanks Steve.......I have been wanting...no longing... to stay at/rent that place for 18 years....or since I started working for my current employer who owns it along with his siblings. At first I was told no...we dont rent it out.....Fast forward to now...I have gotten my boss out of trouble on so many deadline jobs or as I like to say "saved his ass" and he knows it well. He decided to grant my recent request for a stay....and for free! How to change the thread title...when I started it...i thought it was going to be about bonito but it went astray....by my own doing. |
Very nice Bob
I’m sure you deserved that, well done. Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |
Spanish mackerel in late September. A southern fish that I used to catch off the NC shore. Tells you everything about global warming.

I remember that right about the same time, a guy caught a small tarpon in Hyannis, throwing either a Roberts or Spofford rabbit plug. Then, in the early 1980s, someone caught a 43 pound cubera snapper at the herring run in the Canal. |
