Motion to save this site

I would like to hear thoughts about returning this to a fishing site first. My first move would be to make the Political Forum accessible only through a password, similar to the ones once used in the Cutty and MV forums. If you want to continue with all that, at least here, it would still continue to exist, BEHIND THE CURTAIN.... Anything political posted in the public fishing forums would be A. removed, or B. moved to the PF by a moderator with no warnings. This way political circle jerk doesn't come up dominating the new threads search, and might even encourage more fishing posts...
What say you? We all have our political opinions, but must they be allowed to dominate a fishing site? John's fishing site? Maybe some of us old guys could lead the change back to the more social camaraderie we used to enjoy here.

EliTheBeerGuy 10-25-2021 11:01 AM

I would LOVE to get rid of the political posts, or at least make it more difficult to see them. I was recently poking around the site trying to figure out a way to "hide" that topic from my view (the same way I hide my friends on facebook that post too much political crap).

You have my full support. How can I help?

On that note, if you can pull it off to get rid of the political stuff, I'm interested in joining as a site sponsor.

I would suggest updating the moderators so folks with time to do so can keep things on an even keel. Feel free to step up. I can likely do some moderating.

I’d vote to eliminate the political forum completely, why even keep it as it seems to only have a negative impact on this site.

fishbones 10-25-2021 11:57 AM

The problem isn’t the political forum. No one is forced to go in there and if you don’t like it, stay out. The problem with this site is that there are rarely any posts about fishing. It would be great to see posts about people catching fish or what lures or techniques are working. Unfortunately, I think most people post on FB now because they have a bigger audience and want to see how many “likes” they get for posting a pic of a fish they caught.

It's like driving by an accident, hard not to look.

Sad but true.
I’m 14 and greatly prefer the site over Facebook.

piemma 10-25-2021 02:45 PM

I don't go to the PF. There's no need for me to express my political beliefs nor is there a need to critique every political post that is made.

If you don't like it, don't go there. No one is forcing anyone to visit that Forum.

I agree that there aren't enough fishing post and I am guilty as I haven't fished much since I sold my boat.

Hopefully that will change.

I think the site needs some updating but I know John has a "day job" and doesn't have the time to devote to the site that he use to. The revenue generated by the site probably just about keeps the lights on.

The Dad Fisherman 10-25-2021 02:51 PM

Well, you guys are the members, start posting. Maybe the plug guys start a plug of the week thread in the plug forum. Maybe start some historical threads about surfcasting, bump up the ones from the past so new members can read them and older members can relive them, guys who go togging, start some threads, guys who go ground fishing, start some threads, fly fisherman and guys who tie flies, threads.

If you want the political forum to wane, give people other reasons to come here.

Right now you're sitting in your truck going "take me somewhere" but you're not putting the key in the ignition or gas in the tank.

this is very cool, you have me thinking about being 14 and loving to fish at every opportunity...I had a little pouch that I got at the Army Navy store with a blue and white Atom popper, a blue/silver Kastmaster and a black/silver Rebel and that was what I rolled with...drove the 10 speed to the jetty or beach

I miss fishing with mono....not really :laugha:

I'm not so sure Facebook is the reason this site has minimal new content. We have a Facebook page and the last post was from March 24, 2018. I'm not saying we should all post there instead of here but if all of us are on Facebook, why aren't there any post on the SB page? I am just as guilty as the next guy for not posting. Life kind of got in the way for a while. Working two jobs, taking care of the old folks, going to watch the boy play baseball in college....and so on. I check in daily but haven't fished a whole lot so I have nothing to share. I think we need to just start talking about what little fishing we do. Or if you are the certain few on here who do get to fish a lot, we need to here your stories.

Clammer 10-25-2021 08:54 PM

alot has happened in the 21 years I,ve been on this site .

in the fisheries , families, health , national, international , Covid..............&&&&&&&&&& life & death
We have lost to the RIP thread many of the guys/gals that were on this site went I found it .
But also many >> just moved on .not all on facebook ............many have disappeared or very close to it ;

polotical forum ....... is not to blame ........... as many have said

just don,t go there .. but we could have less active members

because there are some that 99% come here for the that forum ><.

Raider Ronnie 10-26-2021 07:22 PM

Newsflash.
This hasn’t been a fishing site for about 10 years.

hq2 10-26-2021 08:44 PM

I’ve been trying for a while to post about fishing and get other folks to do likewise. However the combination of FB and overall lousy striper fishing has stifled much of things overall. What this site reminds me of is an island where a lot of boats beached for a party. The tide went out, some people left, and the rest kind of got stranded here together with no company but each other. Now, there doesn’t seem to be much left to talk about. Maybe this site is headed to the fate of surfcaster, reel time, and (last year) NEKF. Would be a pity.

I agree with this 100%...

I think the lack of younger "students" hurts as well, most of us that are left here have been there, done that and got the Tee shirt... there is not a lot that we can discuss that hasn't been beat to death when we talk about fishing in general.
With the state of the fishery ( actually all of them) there are fewer exceptional fish to talk about, you can only post pictures of so many 20lb bass before it becomes , dare I say, boring..things have changed greatly in the 55 or so years since I began fishing.. and I'm not talking about techniques , the fish/fishing/ climate ( oops bad word)have changed, but it's a fact, we all have seen it..warm water fish are moving north, cold water fish are disappearing, the fishable ice has retreated north, for most anglers here, dont ice fish, I still do. but I drive 2 hours north to do it.. when I was a youngster, large sea pollock would invade the ocean front fall and winter and again in the spring, not tiny harbor pollock( we used o get those way up river) I'm talking 15 to 20lb ones, the jetties would be lined with b\guys with 12' surf rods h#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&g Hopkins and cast masters at the feeding schools... I caught King fish and whiting as well as cod all winter off the surf, I haven't heard of a king fish being caught anywhere in a long time... a lot has changed, there is no denying that, people are gone, some fish are gone too, but what's left here , on this site, is a legacy that needs to be told, everyone still here, has a story to tell... and in their own right are a part of fishing history that needs to be preserved..

What he said :agree:

I have fond memories of dragging those big green MDC trash barrels on the beach at plum island to put a driftwood fire in while cod fishing with the white surf rods.
(and no one would bother you)
Fun times.

Maybe we should track down Notaro and Striper Striker X, and bring them back.:rotflmao::hidin:

Stop complaining
Turn a piece of wood and go catch a fish with it…

MAKAI 10-27-2021 07:16 PM

Complaining is how us old seasoned fishermen breathe.

T-man7, let me in on a secret here. That means Clammer likes you when he is chitting on you... And everyone would do that to one another here before the world went all politically correct.

Mike, is sometimes dyslexic and he thought you posted you were 41. Not 14.... (or he inhaled...)

Nightfighter... good one!
Just got power back in Pembroke!! First place I checked on the Interbookwebworld.
