Changes to Commercial Black Sea Bass Limits
still waiting on the Rec limits , but i understand it will be a week shorter season and inch longer 15in to 16 in
But commercial length is 12in 500lb day MAx depending on license Seriously!!! 12 inches Guess this is what big lobbyist can do for you ? Saw this article seems the writer was trying to be neutral and presented both cases https://www.capegazette.com/article/...6880Commercial fishermen do not affect recreational fishing When you look at the commercial versus recreational situation objectively, you can see there is really no conflict. I just can't see it .. History has shown once there's a monetary value to the Fish , the once garbage fish for the commercial industry becomes profitable the rec fisherman take the biggest hits for the least time on the water ... we have seen it with Menhaden Bluefish Bass scup now even mackerel seem to have made it on the list .. Saw this on North carolina environmental site its old data but shows the differences between comm and rec landings and who has the bigger impact on the fishery... in this case verage Commercial Landings and Value 2001–2010 – 179,976 lbs./$102,971 Average Recreational Landings 2001–2010 – 4,056 lbs., 2010 – 4,575 lbs. |

Rec I think is now set at 21st to the 4th, four fish at 16”.

5 in MA. Raising the limit doesn’t affect my guys any; we already throw back anything under 17”.

Well in good old RI we only get TWO BSB pp spring, and 3 fall. Of course more in the fall for the for hire sector.

Funny how they add to the Comm. and take away from Rec. at the same time in Ma. Seems to me the message is pretty clear!

I can agree that a less of a length for comm vs rec is not fair.
How are most comm bsb caught?? Is it by net where allot of dead shorts get thrown back and now they are accounting for this in the quota? I am fully convinced some years back the reason rec haddock went from 19 to 17” was for allot of throwbacks were in that range and were dogfish bait. Now retained to make less impact on the species On this same theory wrt stripers if they are really concerned about protecting the species why are we comm harvesting big fish vs the same slot size as recs to let the big fish produce more eggs etc. don’t know.... mostly a rod/reel fishery. some handline. the comms are targeting "jumbos". worth considerably more then smaller fish
