The Doc
Curious what hook setup y'all are running on the 7" Doc in the surf? I've stuck with trebles, but would like to at least run a single rear hook but would like to know if anyone has run inline hooks in the surf with success? given they hit it so violently and it tends to get knocked around a bit, i've kept the trebles wanting as many chances to set the hook home as possible.

Removing rear treble often alters swim, usually for the worse.
Ways you can compensate are drag (bucktailed hook) and weight (some split shot on single hook) Not having to unglue a fish from 2 sets of trebles - worth consideration :cheers2: |
I fish both sizes with just the belly treble

Just cut off the sharp points, make it blunt, of the rear hook if your worried about weight distribution and altered action.

Just dress a Siwash hook with bucktail.

I've also cut the hooks off and just left the shank on.

3/0 or 4/0 mustard 5x treble on the belly, and either a swish on the tail,
or of I don't want a tail hook at all, but don't want to alter the action, I use heavy cutters to remove the part of the swish and leave the hook shank. |
I find the Doc too heavy … can’t imagine using it in the surf with an 10.5 foot rod. Must be like throw a 6 Oz sinker and chunk of pogie
I get tired casting and working it on the boat…. Never threw the 9 in version But the blues and bass do crush them Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |
