Went out 2 days last week seems to be a lot of bait around but they remain unmolested a few cocktail blues and schoolies completely not worth the effort. With 1 exception a fantastic Sun rise

Haven’t seen any anywhere in Rhode Island lol. But that’s a beast. And it would have dragged you and your yak back out to the windmills

Has the swell calmed? Is a kayak trip to Sakonet worth the long drive?

It laid down. But so little action I wouldn’t say it’s worth the drive

Newport -> Sakonnet Monday; nothing on top other than some macks and small stuff in the harbor. Very quiet
100:1 ratio short to keeper seabass. A few mackerel on the seabass jigs. One 23" blackfish on the slow pitch jig and toy rod was the highlight

I know fish have fins, but I was into them along Hazard Ave 2 Tuesday's ago....on my way back to the ramp in Newport, I picked 1, dropped 1 between CH and FA? Thought for sure it was on (lotta max in that area)....but then I've been from Sakonnet to along Ocean Dr since then, and only found some bass/blue mixes..... figure the schools I saw retreated further South,or skipped around our points? Haven't been to Westport area in a while??

wdmso 09-08-2023 09:51 AM

Was out yesterday.. Left from the weaver cove boat ramp off Burma rd decided to head out the west passage saw nothing until just before scarborough Beach just small bass with blues mixed in . countuined to PJ no action around the lighthouse camped out front of the main jetty Jigged up 2 Bonita and got one Albie on the only blow up I saw. Cruised the beach 1/2 toward Charlestown Breachway lots of small bass tight against the beach .went back Via Newport saw nothing again all the way back... was told wednesday the Albies were all over and not finicky . just my luck

And at times the most frustrating! My back has kept me out of my kayak for months, a couple hours in that seated position and I’m heading to the ramp. So local sea bass this spring was ok, but driving to my favorite haunts in Westport or Sakonet, just isn’t worth the gas for a couple hours of fishing.

Looking forward to a couple cortisone shots and future RFA on the lower back. If I’m walking a golf course, working around the yard or a carving I’m fine, sit me in a 90 degree or if I stand on pavement for too long and I’m toast. Thankfully my new interest in carving has kept me from wishing to badly I’m out on the water.

I am surprised, but very happy for you! I am trying to get down for a couple shots at them with Dangles in the near future!

I’m 0 for 4-5 trips this season with countless shots at boils …. :-(
Wayne got one on one of the trips …. :-)

They’ve been hitting short on the snacks so I rigged one with a stinger hook, got buttoned up good on one and bing,, the hook come loose, operator error knot…. :smash:

Maybe three years back Sakonet was hot and I had an unbelievable day fishing my 4" split tails in an amber color, they just hammered it fishing fast with 3/8oz head for some casting weight. Hooked up with 15 and probably managed to land 8-9 of them and then exhausted I stopped casting to fish still feeding.

I did this last year and it produced and this has accounted for 3 out of my 6 so far this year. And it worked even my Uncle from Ohio who isn’t a the greatest caster just get it in the zone and a moderate to slow retrieve .

A casting egg. 3 feet of fluorocarbon tied to a fly .

Got out around Gooseberry last week. Some decent BSB
fishing there; plenty of shorts, but got some keepers too.
A few stripers on the surface but no luck plugging them.
Plenty of scup around.

Went today out of Westport perfect day , flat. weather overcast . Could see a blow up a mile out. If there were any blow ups. Even went to Sakonnet point. Total skunk

After a two month break that my back requested from the kayak, after the morning yah rain, I put in and paddled over to Plymouth harbor and had the most osprey pain in the butt couple hours. If you looked away for a minute while navigating the boats, one of the dozen birds would snatch your bunker. Managed a couple 40” bass and then the sun came out and headed in. Mainly wanted to check out new battery to make sure the Garmin wasn’t my issue since the failures the last couple trips out months ago.

Total skunk? Were you fishing for stripers only? There have been plenty of BSB, scup and bluefish around down there. I only fish for stripers now as a side, BTW, when I'm fishing for something else; just doesn't seem worth the effort any more most of the time, especially with the new tiny slot limits.
