pollack as food?
 

couple buddies and i are doing a trip next week, hopefully we’ll get into some big pollack. Are they decent eating compared to cod? can i use them for chowder?

If you ever had a McDonalds fillet o’fish it was likely pollack from Alaska I believe.

what do you think, could you use it to make chowder? i know you know a fair amount about the culinary aspects of fishing….maybe not firm enough?

I have spent a lot of time jigging pollock in the GOM with Eastman's Fleet over the years. Great eating. You can cook it any way you like. I actually prefer it to cod for chowder as it is a bit more firm.

Have fun. If you get into the big boys they fight like hell. Similar to bluefish.

Very important to get them on ice ASAP in warm weather, as they can get soft and mushy, but at this time of the year, obviously it's not an issue.

They fight better than a cod, and they can often be caught feeding on top, too. You can have a lot of fun with teen sized pollock on surface lures.

Bleed them out. Deep Frying works too.

The smaller ones are very tasty. Pan fried ‘em in butter, about as good as brook or rainbow trout.

Pollock is in just about everything packaged seafood - good stuff

my opinion. decent, not as good as cod or haddock. fun to catch. Even vacuum sealed it didn't freeze great. Not poor, but not great either.

bleed them and get them on ice quickly. pollock fishing used to be pretty awesome - double headers of angry 25 pounders. still some boats that do well targeting them
