Restoring an antique lamp fixture
1 Attachment(s)
Picked this up last week. Pretty amazing metalwork and it has all the original glass. I’m cleaning it first with a wire brush which seems to be getting the surface rust and gunk pretty well. Curious what your thoughts are on additional prep before I spray it with a metal primer? Converter? Just wipe with acetone? Thanks.

Id take it so an auto body shop and have them gently sand blast it. Maybe they would paint it for you too.

Possibly use a rust inhibitor? I've used them in the past (Don't remember the name) and they seem to work well. Paint on and when it dries you can prime and paint.

I've used naval jelly on tools and my wading boot grip studs. Works ok. When painted surface is still rough/ and pitted when tho. Looks like spray painted with rust oleum hammered paint
Like advised, see if can find an auto body place that can sand blast it. Will get a much better finish. Sand blasting services can be expensive tho. I know priced out my plow and they wanted 1k. U can also check harbor freight as I have seen small DYI sand blasting kits there for rather short money Let know how finished looks. Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |
I’d start by pressure washing it, preferably outside on a hot sunny day.
All sorts of looks that you could end up with, I’d consider letting it oxidize and then clear coating it. Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |

Clear coat idea is interesting. The glass is an orange red that matches what looks like the original paint. I was maybe thinking just go black so there’s good contrast from the metalwork. |
