I have never seen nor heard of boat strikes on this coast, though I do recall a sailboat being landed on by a California whale. In September 2008, second year with my 20' cc, I was out on Stellwagen. FAC conditions. A whale breached two boat lengths off my beam and the splash hit me like a firehose... Totally soaked. A neighboring boat gave me a beach towel to dry off the best I could, and I pulled on foul weather gear to keep me from getting cold on the way in. (approximately 13 miles.) Since then, I have always carried a towel and a change of clothes in separate vacuum sealed bags....
Closer in shore, I have been right on top of a large pogie school when it exploded beside me when attacked by a grey seal... That was startling enough!
Glad the folks in the NH incident are ok. It seems a number of boats in the immediate area were hooked up on bass so not ready to say they should have been giving the whales room... Especially if there hadn't been any breaches ahead of the one that capsized the Parker.
