DMF Adopts Emergency Commercial Striped Bass Regulations
Received this notice yesterday. I am NOT looking for this to be a pissing match of com vs rec, just looking for some input from commercial fishermen on the subject. To me, this seems like some good options are being presented as it kind of removes some of the wild west of the MA com fishery (or at least my perceived notion thereof.) I have always wondered why there wasn't a push from the true commercial fishermen in MA - not the ones who use it to pay for vacations and weekend gas - to limit entry as this would theoretically benefit those who actually make a living off the sea.

In my view completely pointless.. bread and circus
It doesn’t address or adjust catch size and retention (as they do with recreational) nor does it address the kick the can down the road mentality when it comes to filling the quota?.. to be very simple if the quota is not filled within the date range, the season closes. Period |
striped bass
It was only always going to happen as they try to solve a problem they create. They still make comm guys take the breeders out of the stock and act surprised the stock is in trouble. Solution would be to take smaller fish and regulate by weight and not number of fish, leave the breeders alone! During the moratorium I saw pictures of schools of bass taken out at Georges Bank that were in the millions, is it possible that the guess at numbers of fish are only looking at inshore areas? They were feeding on Ocean Herring.
