what I've found is that the higher the lip slot, the deeper the plug swims. The lower the slot, the higher it swims (surface swimmer). This, plus lead and wood density, all play a part as well.

kutzalls are great, but they are a pain the butt to clean them out. Best way I've found is to burn off the wood debris. Wire brush afterwards.
