Not sure on the inks. On paints I like to give them a full 24 hours to cure before clear coat. Longer in cooler weather. You painting with inks?

I did the same as Slip: got a blank Do It mold and drilled it out. Instead of a coat hanger, I got one of the inserts they use for the egg sinker mold (has a handle with a wire). Easy to pull out....

I like them to sit verticle in the water. 1-2 inches of the nose sticking out, depending on the size of the pencil. Wood type makes a difference. Try a few different woods and see which you prefer.

Don't have the lathe, so I can't really comment on that. Tools, get decent ones. I use a 3/4 inch gouge and a 1 inch skew, both Sorby. All I ever needed to turn plugs.
