what I've found is that the higher the lip slot, the deeper the plug swims. The lower the slot, the higher it swims (surface swimmer). This, plus lead and wood density, all play a part as well.

kutzalls are great, but they are a pain the butt to clean them out. Best way I've found is to burn off the wood debris. Wire brush afterwards.

Personally, I don't think its a PIA because that's the way I've always done it. I should really start making some molds. I really don't have problems with getting WD40 on the plug. I spray it away...

I think it does make a difference, especially if you not weighting it. I make some unweighted swimming plugs and find it absolutely necessary to get the desired action.
