It takes a lot for a bridge to actually collapse as there's so much redundancy and load redistribution on most structures. If/when it happens it will be an old structure, most likely a truss. State has special inspection requirements for fracture critical elements to monitor for fatigue cracks, but something can happen quickly. Vessel collision taking out a pier could also do it.
