Sig Sauer 226 and the old reliable 1911 are my two of choice. Used by many active operators as sidearm of choice. I went with 9mm for my Sig as I was thinking about availability of ammo, rightly or wrongly, that was what I did. Sig has a real nice academy in NH. As for the 1911, you can choose between Colt, Smith and Wesson, Sig, and Ruger, as well as other manufacturers. .22 is a target pistol.
After getting a feel for a gun, ie. does it feel right in your grip, don't stop after firing it. Your decision should include breakdown, cleaning, etc
