Cotton Cordell Pencil! I had a run in with them last Spring and no matter what I threw, the bass only hit the pencil.
Mind you, I do NOT high stick like many people. Instead, I pick up the slack and make it pop, then reel in the slack and make it pop. There is a slight pause to the lure with this slow retrieve, so if you are doing it the way I do it, you will make a small splash, the plug will be sitting there in the water as you pick up the slack, then small splash again.
I guess you can say I fish it like a Spook in that sense.
I'll also pick up the slack and just drag the plug across the top of the water so that it makes a sort of splash with a wake then repeat.
I use the former retrieval at night as well if I know the fish are on top.
The Darter is always a great one too since you can give it a few cranks, pause, give it a few cranks, pause, etc. Matching the swimming of the squid
I didn't have this experience but this one fisherman was nailing them using a Yozuri Mag-Darter I believe. He caught 2 30 lb. fish that had 2 whole squid in their bellies! As far as retrieval I think he just kept the rod down and reeled in. If it wasn't the mag-darter, I'm not sure what it was then (it definitely was a swimmer and not a crystal minnow, it looked like the mag darter).
To this day, I still have no clue how to work that damn plug.
