Exercise, diet, and Omega-3 tabs worked for me. For the first time in my life, my HDL numbers are way above the LDL. I used to be on statins. Haven't taken them in over 3 years. Exercise and diet were the keys. Olive oil and other mono-unsaturated fats can help raise HDL. My doctor recommended one tablespoon of olive oil per day. For exercise, I started with walking for 20 minutes as often as I could. The bad knees are a problem there for you. Pedaling a bike puts no stress on your knees, as long as you're not trying to push too high of a gear. I switched to cycling for exercise 3 years ago, and now I can ride 100 miles with very little hurting.
I'm 60, and I haven't been in this great shape since I was running marathons in my late 20s.
