I believe it is the finish. I think at least St Croix uses Flex Coat brand finish. Flex Coat is known for turning cloudy like this after exposed for a long time to excessive moisture.

This is why many guys wrapping rods use AftCote. Not sure about the other finishes like ProCoat, U40 and the few others you can get. I have stuck with AftCoat.

Niko, I wonder it you let it dry good and scotch brite it good and put a topcoat of Aftcote over it would make it stop happening.

May try wiping some alcohol over it to dry it out.

I can do this for you but go back to work soon. Mid April can do.
