The penalty was bc it dealt with a level playing field and the integrity of the game. In many instances lying to someone about the coverup causes more penalties then if you come clean. The league felt they weren't honest.
You guys should be mad at Brady's attorney and whomever gave him the advice to not turn his text messages over to the league since they supposedely would have cleared him of any wrong doing. Those people caused his 4 games suspension.

The Players Union was adamant that he not turn over his email or phone records due to A. this NOT being a legal inquiry or proceeding, and B due to the precedent it would set.
Bottom line is the League desperately needs to get its priorities in order........
