Ok, so Jim Wareing, my son Anthony and I head over late last Saturday to fish opening day. We do well in Lobsterville, each of us getting an Albie and missing/dropping several others. I need to leave that morning to get the boy to hockey and feel pretty good about our start. Jim stays until Thursday and for Zilch. Ouch.
Jim and I head back this past Sunday night, fish all night in the rocks for a total of 3 short hits and a chop on eels(big moon, no overcast, weathermen suck). I leave and the next night Jim has 2 mid 30" fish in a 10 min stretch over a 3+ hr night in the rocks. Last night, I take the late ferry over and fish one of my favorite rockpiles for 2 plus hrs of prime time for 1 short hit(I think it was a seabass). After that, we head to Edgartown to find some bait. Ended up with a dozen squid and 8 butters but also livelined some adult pogies that were in thick and being molested. No takers at the wharf so headed to South. Had a bunch of good hits before sun-up but only managed a small doggie to the beach. Then slid down the Wasque and practiced casting at Albies for an hour before heading home.
So, the bottom line is that it has been a typically HORRIBLE start to the derby. Every year I say the Bass fishing can't possibly get worse, and yet it does. The Albies bailed us out the last 2 years and I still have hopes that they will this year.
There is one big difference though this year - My body HURTS! My hips ache, my casting shoulder crackles, my stamina(and will to fish) just isn't there like it used to be. Turned fitty last December - starting to think that these allnighters plus may better be left for the young studs.
Note to self - bring extra bottle of ibuprofen for first week of October.
