AAA batteries are almost always offset and connected "in series." So, that being said....the current runs from + to -. Which is why when you put batteries in, they are always opposite polarity from one another. You can use a piece of paperclip to make the connection where it is broken. Bend it as needed. I used washers, pen springs, and a few other Jerry Rigs. You can even superglue them down if needed.

Re-looking at your problem....as long as there is some sort of connection/terminal left (where it snapped) that will make a connection with your paperclip for instance, then you should be okay. If it snapped and the terminal is inside the unit, it will need to be taken apart. Hopefully that's not the case.
