An engine must breathe and a clogged cat will stop just that...
Some of those quicky lubes have a system for replacing engines when they "forget the oil" or "forget the plug". When I worked for Toyota we had a few engines redone because of quickies neglecting the oiling needs of an engine. Also, I would never have the engine "rebuilt", especially at a dealership, if possible. Have a remanufactured long block put in as that will cover all of the internally lubricated parts... They should pay. Running a few miles without oil then topping off might seem OK but there is almost no question that you have at least some ring wear and likely rod bearing wear too. No oil, no pressure. a skim of oil on a bearing won't last, pressure is needed to keep the oil in the bearings....
