with regard to "records" yes I am sad to say the NJ holds it for now...I remember quite a bit of contraversy about his catch but it has been on the books now for quite some time.
Tonys surf catch on the cape was big news but was short lived when Al from NJ beat it.
There have been bass weighed in at Fultons fish market (NY city) (that came from the MD area that was 87 lbs and there was one caught a long time ago in a net the topped 100lbs and it was gutted the estimate was 115+... And I read a long time ago about a net catch of 125 lbs in NC in the late 1800's....but this is history. Today, anything over 50 is big news, 60 is a real long shot these days and 70+ is like winning powerball. You have to wonder what happed to the year class of fish where tony's and al's came from? could there be a great grand mom of bass out there...I doubt it. From what I read I don't think they can live that long. But there is serious hope for the future. I fished alot for bass as a boy with my dad in the 1960's ( I'm 44) and there were A LOT of fish around those days, tons of schoolies in the bays just like the last few years have been showing. (back then the limit in NY was 16 in and there was no bag limit or season on the catch) The sad thing (IMO) as in MD and VA where the commerical guys harvested 6-9' fish. I would see them lined up in the market...I could not believe my eyes. they looked like smelts.
I think my kids (and your kids) may have a shot of catching record though...with all the small fish and the catch and release going on and the ches. bay in better shape these days....I think we will have a record fish of over 100 pounds in the next 20 years or so.
Maybe sooner, but I doubt this year. (hope I am wrong)

PS woke up at 4:30 and could not sleep...headed to east beach and fished near the camper site about 2/3 of the way out to the beachway. Caught 1 about 10 pounds and dropped 1 (about the same) and saw 1 jump. not a lot of action this morning. As I was exiting I saw a bunch of guys in the rocky area to the west . That is always been a good spot. I did not fish it though today. Had to head back and get some work done....
I need to fish closer to quonnie perhaps tonight...
