Where you are adding the silver trim band you are using a silver inlay. Try wrapping the silver and then the black over it (rather than as a simultanious inlay) so the spacing between the black spirals is bigger showing more silver. Maybe just 3 to 5 spirals of black spaced over the silver length rather than every other thread.
To answere the specific question you asked , don't use the silver as a guide overwrap. the metallics aren't really strong enough to be used as overwraps. If you want the metallic silver overwrap for color , wrap with the regular nylon first , put a coat of finish(not too heavy) that will give you strengt6h , then overwrap just for the metallic color look. Finish over everything then.
