seabuggy, I wouldn't make plugs out of ash, or poplar for that matter. Sometimes these older plugs are made from old growth wood with much tighter growth rings than you can find today, that feature can have some bearing on how the plugs behaved. wood is good. Pine will work, I just wouldn't use the eastern white pine that is common around here, try sugar pine or stick with cedar. You are lucky to have some originals to go by.
