Pat,
While it's sweet that you're making your girlfriend a rod, don't you think an off-the-shelf rod would be better and more cost effective considering her beginner status? If she damages it or it gets lost to the sea it won't be such a heart ache. Later as she grows her skills you'll better see what kind of more custom rod is suited for her.
In the mean time you can also grow your rod building skills and experience so you can do an even better job when the time comes.
Just a thought.
