Yup---sounds like some sort of electrical explosion. I think Westerly State Airport has some sort of instrument landing approach to one of their runways and they often have their own generators to prevent a sudden power failure causing a plane on short final from losing the guideslope/localizer beam being transmitted when it's low to the ground.

I did see the Aurora Borealis on a very clear, cold night from watch Hill Light, too. But obviously that wasn't what made a sudden flash and explosion.
